Online Video Marketing Successful When Targeted To Specific Markets

According to a recent article on eMarketer, forty-five percent of business owners expressed interest inbusiness video marketing, but 22 percent said they were frustrated with trying to understand online advertising.

The key to successful corporate videos? Targeting an appropriate age group. According to Forbes Insights, executives under 40 are comfortable watching a streaming ad accompanying an online video. On the opposite end of the spectrum, executives ages 50 and older are far less tolerant.

According to an article on GigaOM.com, “The demographic of online video viewers is expanding, but it’s still dominated by young viewers watching user generated clips.”

A bi-annual video study from AOL’s Advertising.com reported quite the contrary. The study reports 69 percent of those viewing videos are age 35 or older, with a preference for viewing news clips online.

“The Internet is still seen first and foremost as an information resource,” said Lynda Clarizio, president of Advertising.com, in an article on MarketingCharts.com. “With news clips remaining the most popular type of streamed content, video viewing habits reflect that status.”

As for video advertisements, the Advertising.com report states that consumers accept them as part of the video experience. Ninety-four percent of respondents prefer ads to subscription fees, however 63 percent say shorter ads would be nice.

Video viewing tastes also differ by age. The Advertising.com report found that 18-34-year-old audiences prefer entertainment content such as music videos and TV shows. In contrast, the 35 and older audience is more likely to view news.

New research from GigaOM Pro also found that video marketing online is most frequently watched by those who are well off. The research states that roughly 14% of online video viewers make more than $100,000, compared to 11% of non-online video watchers.
